Areal Flood Warning

... A Flood Warning remains in effect until 630 PM EDT/530 PM CDT/ for
Rhea... Bradley... Sequatchie... Bledsoe... Meigs... Polk... McMinn...
Marion and Hamilton counties...

At 313 PM EDT/213 PM CDT/, emergency management reported flooding in
many locations across the warning area. Numerous secondary roads
have been closed due to flooding and small creeks and streams are
out of their banks. Between 2 to 5 inches of rain has fallen over
the last 36 hours, with localized amounts up to 6 inches. An
additional 1 to 2 inches is possible over the next 3 hours.

Some locations that will experience flooding include...
Chattanooga, Cleveland, Athens, Dayton, Dunlap, Jasper, Pikeville,
Decatur, Benton, Ducktown, Soddy-Daisy, Signal Mountain, Etowah,
South Pittsburg, Spring City, Walden, Lakesite, Whitwell, Kimball and
Monteagle.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood
deaths occur in vehicles.

In hilly terrain there are hundreds of low water crossings which are
potentially dangerous in heavy rain. Do not attempt to cross flooded
roads. Find an alternate Route.

The Flash Flood Watch continues for

* portions of southwest North Carolina and east Tennessee,
including the following areas, in southwest North Carolina,
Cherokee and Clay. In east Tennessee, Anderson, Bledsoe,
Blount Smoky Mountains, Bradley, Campbell, Claiborne, east
Polk, Grainger, Hamilton, Knox, Loudon, Marion, McMinn, Meigs,
Morgan, NW Blount, northwest Monroe, Rhea, Roane, Scott TN,
Sequatchie, southeast Monroe, Union, and west Polk.

* Until 8 PM EDT /7 PM CDT/ this evening

* 2 to 4 inches of rainfall will be common across much of the area
through this evening with localized amounts in excess of 5
inches possible.

* The persistent rainfall will fall on already saturated ground
across much of the area. The additional heavy rains could lead
to flooding of roadways, poor drainage areas, low lying areas
and small rivers and streams across the region.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Flash Flood Watch means that conditions may develop that lead
to flash flooding. Flash flooding is a very dangerous situation.

You should monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take quick
action if flooding is observed or a Flash Flood Warning is
issued. If you come to a closed or flooded Road... turn around!

* Flood stage is 14.0 feet... action stage is 12.0 feet.
* Forecast... the river will rise to near 13.9 feet Monday morning.
* At 14.0 feet... flooding of agricultural land begins.
