... Winter weather arriving this weekend across New Mexico...

A storm system gathering strength over the eastern Pacific Ocean
will bring the next blast of winter weather to New Mexico this
weekend. It may come rather abruptly as near record warmth is
expected Friday.

Rain and mountain snow is expected to develop over western New
Mexico Saturday afternoon as a potent cold front approaches from
the west. This front will race eastward and spread rain and snow
into the Rio Grande Valley and surrounding high terrain through
Saturday evening. Dramatically colder air moving in behind the
cold front will quickly change rain over to snow in all areas,
including the Rio Grande Valley. This system has the potential to
produce several inches of snow in the higher terrain of northern
New Mexico, along with strong winds and blowing snow. The sharply
colder air arriving Saturday evening may produce a flash freeze
on Road surfaces. This storm system will linger over northeastern
New Mexico Sunday, with a few inches of snow possible near the New
Mexico Colorado border.

Windy conditions and bitter cold wind chills will persist Sunday
and Monday as the storm exits into the Great Plains. Those
planning travel through New Mexico should stay alert to the latest
forecasts and roadway conditions. Monitor NOAA Weather Radio,
weather.Gov/abq or your local media for the latest updates on this
situation. For the latest Road conditions, visit nmroads.Com,
dial 511, or 1.800.432.4269.
