Public Information Statement

Statement as of 6:50 PM CDT on July 24, 2016

... Preliminary review of observed high temperatures and maximum heat indices
from airports across western and north central Nebraska from July 18th through
July 23rd 2016...

A strong ridge of high pressure... which was centered over the center of the
conus (contiguous United states) over the past week... brought hot temperatures
to all of western and north central Nebraska. The highest temperature observed
from Monday... July 18th through Saturday... July 23rd 2016 at all the available
ASOS (automated surface observing system[s]) and AWOS (automated weather
observing system[s]) across western and north central Nebraska... was 102
degrees on Wednesday... July 20th... at the Valentine Airport in Cherry County.

In addition to the very hot temperatures across the region... very humid
conditions were experienced across the region. These humid conditions... were
the result of a strong influx of Gulf of Mexico moisture... combined with the
available local moisture from transpiring crops. The combination of hot
temperatures and high humidity... created maximum heat indices in the upper 90s
to 100s across most of western and north central Nebraska from Tuesday... July
19th through Saturday... July 23rd. The highest heat index observed from
Tuesday... July 19th through Saturday... July 23rd 2016 at all the available ASOS
(automated surface observing system[s]) and AWOS (automated weather observing
system[s]) across western and north central Nebraska... was 111 degrees on
Friday... July 22nd... at the North Platte Airport in Lincoln County.
