Areal Flood Warning

Statement as of 9:34 PM EDT on April 16, 2014

Expires 7:00 AM EDT on April 17, 2014

The National Weather Service in Caribou Maine has extended the

* Flood Warning for urban areas and small streams in...
Aroostook County in northern Maine...
this includes the cities of... Van Buren... Saint pamphile... Presque
Isle... Portage... Madawaska... Limestone... Lac Frontiere... Houlton...
Fort Kent... Fort Fairfield... Estcourt Station... Eagle Lake...
Deboullie Mountain... Daaquam... Clayton Lake... Caribou... Allagash...

* until 700 am EDT Thursday

A Flood Warning means that flooding is imminent or has been reported.
Stream rises will be slow and flash flooding is not expected.
However... all interested parties should take necessary precautions
immediately.

While colder temperatures have slowed runoff and allowed for
improving conditions across the County this evening... rivers and streams
are still running high and while some roads and bridges which were
earlier closed have now opened... many others remain water covered
and impassable.

There are also signs of ice movement and the potential for ice jams
continuing to affect the Saint John river... particularly in the
stretch from Allagash to Fort Kent. While no river flooding is
currently ongoing along the Saint John... persons along this waterway
should remain alert for rapidly changing conditions as ice jams are
very unpredictable and can cause flooding in a very short period of
time.

safely. Move to higher ground.

Areal Flood Watch

Statement as of 10:32 PM EDT on April 16, 2014

Expires 3:00 PM EDT on April 17, 2014

... Flood Watch remains in effect through Thursday afternoon...

The Flood Watch continues for

* portions of east central Maine... north central Maine...
northern Maine... southeast Maine and west central Maine...
including the following areas... in east central Maine...
central Penobscot... northern Penobscot and southern Penobscot.
In north central Maine... central Piscataquis... northern
Piscataquis and southern Piscataquis. In northern Maine...
northeast Aroostook... Northwest Aroostook and southeast
Aroostook. In southeast Maine... central Washington... coastal
Hancock... coastal Washington... interior Hancock and northern
Washington. In west central Maine... northern Somerset.

* Through Thursday afternoon

* while the intrusion of much colder and drier air has helped slow
runoff and improve conditions across the region... many roads
remain closed due to flooding.

* Ice had broken up and was moving on the rivers especially the
Saint John... Aroostook and Piscataquis rivers. An ice jam on
the Aroostook River at Fort Fairfield had moved into New
Brunswick earlier Wednesday afternoon and now threatens
interests in western New Brunswick. There is still a possible
ice jam near Masardis and earlier water was reported 16 inches
deep in Oxbow flats. Many streams and rivers continue to rise
including the Mattawamkeag and Penobscot rivers. Colder
temperatures tonight will slow the rising waters but the threat
of flooding continues and flooding can rapidly develop in the
vicinity of ice jams. Those with interests along rivers and
streams should remain alert for ice jams and possible flooding.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Flood Watch means there is a potential for flooding based on
current forecasts.

You should monitor later forecasts and be alert for possible
flood warnings. Those living in areas prone to flooding should be
prepared to take action should flooding develop.
