Areal Flood Warning

Statement as of 7:41 AM CDT on May 24, 2015

Expires 2:15 PM EDT on May 24, 2015

... A Flood Warning remains in effect until 115 PM CDT Sunday for
Greenwood... Chautauqua... eastern Chase and Elk counties...

At 740 am CDT... Doppler radar indicated heavy rainfall had exited
the warned area. However... rainfall is expected to overspread
southeast Kansas from the south again today... with additional
amounts of around one inch possible. Consequently... areas of
flooding will continue through at least early this
afternoon... including street flooding... flooding of various County
roads and low-lying areas... as well as flooding along the banks of
streams and creeks.

Some locations that will experience flooding include...
Eureka... Sedan... Madison... Howard... Cedar Vale... Strong City...
Moline... Longton... Hamilton... Severy... Grenola... Fall River... Peru...
Chautauqua... Elk Falls... Elgin... Niotaze... Climax... Virgil and Eureka
City Lake.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Excessive runoff from heavy rainfall will cause flooding of small
creeks and streams... as well as farm and country roads. Do not
attempt to travel across flooded roads. Find alternate routes.

Do not drive your vehicle into areas where the water covers the
roadway. The water depth may be too great to allow your car to cross
safely. Move to higher ground.

Flash Flood Watch

Statement as of 3:53 AM CDT on May 24, 2015

Expires 8:00 AM EDT on May 25, 2015

... Flash Flood Watch remains in effect through Monday morning...

The Flash Flood Watch continues for

* a portion of southeast Kansas... including the following
areas... Allen... Chautauqua... Elk... Greenwood... Labette...
Montgomery... Neosho... Wilson and Woodson.

* Through Monday morning.

* Showers and thunderstorms will remain possible through tonight.
Rain may be heavy at times. With grounds already saturated... any
additional rainfall will go into runoff and will likely result
in flooding. Minor river flooding is already forecast for some
of the rivers in southeast Kansas.

* Those with outdoor plans along creeks and rivers need to monitor
the weather situation closely.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Flash Flood Watch means that conditions may develop that lead
to flash flooding. Flash flooding is a very dangerous situation.
Remember to turn around... don't drown.

You should monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action
should flash flood warnings be issued.

... On this date in weather history...

In 1990... four tornadoes roared across parts of central
Kansas... of which 2 reached F3 intensity. One massive F3
tornado... possessing a track 26 miles long and three
quarters of a mile wide... tore through Barton... Rice and
Ellsworth counties. Described as a huge black wall... the
tempest injured 6 and derailed 88 cars of a 125 car
freight train... some of which were stacked 3 to 4 cars
high. It caused around $500,000 damage. The second F3
tornado... believed to have touched down multiple
times... produced a path 60 miles long and around one
quarter mile wide across Rice... McPherson and Marion
counties. This tornado also hit a freight
train... derailing 87 of 103 cars. This second tornado
caused nearly $3 million damage in McPherson and Marion
counties alone. In 1962... severe thunderstorms wreaked
havoc over much of central and eastern Kansas.Reno and
Harvey counties were hit by 5 tornadoes of which 3
reached F3 intensity. Three of the tornadoes injured 6
and caused $500,000 damage. One F3 tornado destroyed a
bowling alley between Nickerson and Hutchinson... while a
second moved erratically between Burrton and Halstead.
The severe thunderstorms also bombarded these areas with
2 to 4 inch diameter hail.
