The Flood Warning continues for
the Walnut river at Winfield.
* From early this morning until Monday evening.
* At 2:01 am Saturday the stage was 17.3 feet.
* Flood stage is 18.0 feet.
* Minor flooding is forecast.
* Forecast... rise above flood stage by early this morning and
continue to rise to near 19.8 feet by early Sunday morning. The
river will fall below flood stage by Monday morning.
* Impact... at 20.0 feet... flood waters flow over County Road Cowley 2
west of rock. Then 4 miles northwest of Winfield, Cowley County
Road 18 floods over a section just west of 71st Road.

... A Flood Warning remains in effect until 130 PM CDT Saturday for
southeastern Butler and Cowley counties...

Excessive runoff from earlier heavy rainfall will continue to cause
local rises on area creeks... small streams... and low lying areas
in the warned area through the overnight hours.

Some locations that will experience flooding include...
Leon... Burden... Dexter... Atlanta... Latham... Cambridge... Beaumont...
Maple City... Winfield City Lake and El Dorado Airport.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Flood Warning means that flooding is imminent or has been reported.
Stream rises will be slow and flash flooding is not expected.
However... all interested parties should take necessary precautions
immediately.

Excessive runoff from heavy rainfall will cause flooding of small
creeks and streams... as well as farm and country roads. Do not
attempt to travel across flooded roads. Find alternate routes.

Most flood deaths occur in automobiles. Never drive your vehicle into
areas where the water covers the roadway. Flood waters are usually
deeper than they appear. Just one foot of flowing water is powerful
enough to sweep vehicles off the Road. When encountering flooded
roads make the smart choice... turn around... dont drown.

... On this date in weather history...

In 1889, a pair of powerful tornadoes struck central
Kansas. The first twister, an F3 with a track 5 miles
long, leveled 2 farms between 8 and 5 miles southwest of
McPherson. The second was a violent F4. It possessed a
track 25 miles long and one quarter mile wide, as it tore
through Marion and Chase counties. The second twister
destroyed ten farms. On one of The Farms, every building
was swept away. The second twister killed 2 people and
injured 4.
