Special Statement

Statement as of 3:37 PM AKDT on September 28, 2016

Expires 10:00 AM EDT on September 29, 2016

... Strong northerly winds to develop Thursday night into Saturday...

A period of strong northerly winds will develop Thursday night and
persist through Saturday morning. This will result in hazardous
marine and aviation conditions as well as the potential for power
outages and flying debris over land areas.

An unseasonably strong area of high pressure over the Yukon
combined with a surface low pressure system over the northeast
Pacific will lead to the development of strong northerly winds.
Highest winds are expected late Thursday night into Friday with
small craft to gale force winds in the northern and central Inner
Channels. The highest winds will be in locations exposed to the
north or near mountain passes with gusts possibly reaching 40 to
50 mph. A taku wind event in downtown Juneau and Douglas is also
likely late Thursday night into Friday with strong gusts to 55 mph
possible.

This statement will be updated by 6 am akdt Thursday or sooner if
conditions warrant.
